SCAR to Develop a Code of Conduct

SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) delegates have just adopted a resolution creating an Action Group (AG) developing a Code of Conduct for the Exploration and Research of Subglacial Aquatic Environments (SAE). Recommendation to form this group was endorsed by the three SCAR Standing Scientific Groups (Geosciences, Life sciences and Physical sciences).

The draft will first be reviewed by the SCAR Executive Committee in 2009 but could potentially be submitted as an Information Paper to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM)/Committee on Environmental Protection (CEP) in 2010.

The AG will be expected to:

  • Review previous SCAR codes of conduct and ways of reaching a consensus, and develop a Code of Conduct format and content
  • Define the range of activities required for SAE exploration and research
  • Develop guiding principles for SAE exploration and research based on best practices
