Polar View, an international consortium of companies, government agencies and research institutes that provide satellite earth observation monitoring and forecasting services, has recently unveiled a new website providing major improvements to the quality of real-time sea ice information services it provides for the Antarctic. The website represents a greatly improved sea ice monitoring service for the 2009-2010 season.
Coordinated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the new website - www.polarview.aq - provides an interactive map displaying the latest cloud-free imagery and sea ice information available for Antarctica from European Space Agency (ESA) satellites. Navigation tools allow users can easily zoom in on a particular region of Antarctica, and thanks to the frequent satellite images being acquired under the Europan Union’s MyOcean project, the website offers new sea ice information at least every three days.
