Can “Pleistocene Park” Limit the Carbon Impact of Thawing Permafrost?
27.05.2005 - Other
Russian researchers are about to establish a real "Pleistocene Park" in Siberia.
By restoring a habitat lost 10,000 years ago, the scientists are looking to investigate whether introduction of surviving large herbivores (reindeer, moose, Yakutian horses and recently reintroduced musk-oxen) could possibly encourage growth in grasslands which would reduce the release of carbon following thawing of the permafrost due to climate change.
