Punta Arenas, at the southern tip of Chile, is the home of the country’s Antarctic Institute. However Chile plans to build a new complex, which will include the institute’s offices, research laboratories and a museum dedicated to Chile’s long history in Antarctica. “The International Antarctic Centre”, Magallanes Region mayor Liliana Kusanovic says, “will be a world milestone and is part of the city’s urban development with clear environmental sustainability.”
The project will be financed through various sources and aims to become an icon of the city and identify Punta Arenas as the gateway to Antarctica and as an Antarctic city, according to Ms Kusanovic. Once the blueprints are completed and approved, the building, which is programmed to be energy sustainable, should be ready for construction in 2014.
