Baltic Sea Ice down to Record Low

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Agency (SMHI) has reported the lowest extent on record of the Baltic sea ice.

Not only did the Baltic sea ice reach a minimum extent this year, covering just 49,000 square kilometres, the ice season also ended two weeks earlier. The usual extent runs around 180,000 square kilometres.

We all remember the Arctic sea ice having broken its minimum extent record last September 2007. This year, the Arctic Ocean is not the only region suffering from low sea ice extent. The Baltic Sea, and its two arms, the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia near Finland, have all been subject to lower than usual ice coverage.
