Antarctic Iceberg B17B Drifting towards Australia
10.12.2009 - Water & Oceans, Ice & Snow, Other, Antarctic
Nearly ten years ago, iceberg B17B calved off the eastern end of the Ross Ice Shelf. One of the largest to have calved off of the ice shelf (measuring 19 km long and 8 km wide), the iceberg is now making its way towards Australia.
Spotted by an Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) glaciologist who used NASA and ESA satellite images, the iceberg is significant because it is one of the biggeset icebergs ever to be sighted so far north (its most recent location was at 48.8°S and 107.5°E). It is now slowly breaking up as it enters warmer waters, creating several hundred smaller icebergs.
